When I quit my job last year, I told my boss, “I’m not running away from the agency; I’m running toward a more balanced life.” After ten years of agency life filled with urgent deadlines, weekly travel, and countless 12-15 hour days, I was burned out.
Taking time to reflect allowed me to see the bigger picture, and I made the decision to start my own business. It wasn’t just about work-life balance, though that was a significant factor. For many women in PR and marketing, there are other challenges too—sexual harassment, limited growth opportunities in male-dominated leadership, and the “motherhood penalty.”
I’m not alone in making this shift. From 2019 to 2023, women-owned businesses grew nearly twice the rate of men-owned businesses, with a notable acceleration in 2023, according to Wells Fargo’s 2024 Impact of Women-Owned Business Report. This trend speaks volumes about the increasing number of women choosing entrepreneurship as a path to greater control and balance in their lives.
